TAKING THE EASY WAY OUT?

Truth about CupOfNoodles
Contributed by: Colin Chen

Many people eat fast foods such as McDonalds and Burger King because they are quick
easy foods to just grab when you are in a rush or just too lazy to cook. There are other foods
quick and easy to grab laying around your home that people all over eat. A common one even for
me is a CupOfNoodles, many eat this as a meal or even multiple meals throughout the day
thinking that is an ok meal not knowing that a cup of noodles contains high amounts of sodium
and cholesterol just like a bag of chips. In about six chips which is 28g you would have
consumed 290mg of sodium. In one CupOfNoodles there is 1,340mg of sodium. (Nutrient facts)
So based just off that you should know that A CupOfNoodles should not replace regular meals
because it is more of a junk food then an actual meal. Eating this food to much can cause
significant health problems with your kidneys, brain and heart.

The purpose of the kidney is to remove unwanted fluid by filtering your blood through
your kidneys. “Your kidneys use osmosis to draw the extra water out of your blood. This process
uses a delicate balance of sodium and potassium to pull the water across a wall of cells from the
bloodstream into a collecting channel that leads to the bladder.”(bloodpressureuk.org) When you
eat foods with high levels of Sodium it destroys the delicate balance, making it harder for your
kidneys to remove the water. This extra water will cause strain on your kidneys which in time
will lead you to develop kidney disease and high blood pressure.

Another area it affects is the brain because the rise in blood pressure, “it may cause a
slight reduction in the amount of blood reaching the brain. This may lead to dementia (known as
vascular dementia). With this condition the cells in the brain don't work as well as they should
because they are not receiving enough oxygen and nutrients. However, lowering blood pressure
may help to alleviate some of the problems and reduce the risk of greater damage.”
(bloodpressureuk.org) if you don’t lower blood pressure it can become a more serious matter and
cause you to have a stroke. It has the same effect on the heart and not lowering you sodium
intake can cause you to have a heart attack.

Next time you eat something just because it is quick and easy do your research you never
know what kind of affect this food can have on you in the long run because by eating too much
CupOfNoodles you can cause significant damage to brain, heart, and kidneys.

Breaking the Myth Behind the Standard American Diet aka S.A.D

The mainstream notion of the "Standard American Diet" is an ideal that is so familiar it is instinctive to every American. Graphical representations of the diet we are instructed by doctors to abide by are embedded in the psyche of our children, as it is taught in their elementary school curriculum, and popularized by mainstream consumerism. This "guiding light" of nutrition, is something that needs to be challenged and reconstructed; we need to be fully knowledgeable of what we are putting in our bodies instead of just following standards blindly.

The Standard American Diet aka S.A.D. has prevailing characteristics that need to be addressed concerning the amounts of nutrition in what we are being told to put in our bodies. Flour that is white and processed, pasta, rice, and bread are all foods that are bleached with chemicals that move from the supermarket shelves, to our bodies. These chemicals are toxins that should not be taken lightly, and are detrimental to our health. The digestion of these elements elevates triglyceride levels, and causes our pancreas to work over-time, struggling to produce insulin that it doesn’t have the energy to create.

Consumers are often unaware of the lack of sanitary conditions, and the inhumane treatment of animal products. Feces, urine, antibiotics, hormones, and chemicals pollute many of the conventional meats we consume. As far as dairy is concerned, the public probably isn’t immediately aware that artificial hormones are given to our dairy cows. The consumption of these hormones are linked to studies revealing negative health consequences such as cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, cancer, respiratory illnesses.

The seasoning and sweetening of food should also be considered, and broken down. White processed sugar creates a foundation of acidity in our bodies. This acidity demolishes cells that are essential in the healing of nerve damage, and our brain function. Consuming excessive levels of table salt is linked to diseases such as diabetes, cataracts, kidney stones, and osteoporosis.

We as consumers need to evaluate the reasons behind why we eat food. The nourishment of our bodies should be our highest priority, as opposed to eating food simply from a pleasure point of view. People owe it to themselves to re-evaluate food groups that we mentally ascribe our bodies to. Everyone has the right to understand the components that we digest so that we could fully prepare ourselves for optimal health, and stay away from digesting toxins.

“People are fed by the food industry that pays no attention to health,
and are treated by the health industry, which pays no attention to food.”
~Wendell Berry

The following is a list of toxins that consumers should be on the lookout if they value their health and well-being:

1.    High fructose corn syrup
2.    Hydrogenated oils
3.    Monosodium Glutamate Abbreviated: MSG
4.    Synthetic food dyes (BHA, BHT, Red #40, Blue #2, Yellow #5 & 6)
5.    Hydrolyzed vegetable Protein
6.    Trans-fat
7.    Aspartame
8.    Caffeine
9.    Sulfites
10. Potassium Bromate
